MPPI Breakfast Seminar - Wellbeing: A renewed focus for city-building

Speakers:

Antonio Gomez-Palacio - Principal, DIALOG

Abstract: What would urban planning look like if we placed ideas of wellbeing as the fundamental building block? Physical health, yes, but also metal health, social wellbeing, economic wellbeing, resilient ecosystems. These are, increasingly, the aspiration of communities, towns, and cities. Yet, in the heat of decision-making we often struggle to keep the big picture in focus. A potential vehicle for enabling meaningful engagement and informed decision-making is by elevating the understanding and capacity of stakeholders. The Community Wellbeing Framework – developed by the Conference Board of Canada, DIALOG, and others – is a tool for planning and designing the built environment, and critically, for engaging communities in the process.  The MPPI Breakfast session will provide an overview of the approach illustrated by case studies from Ontario, Colorado, and B.C. It will then open up a conversation on the correspondence between cities and wellbeing, and on how to make meaningful headway.
