What is Planning
Professional planners work in the public sector, private sector, and not-for-profit sectors. We do a variety of different work. Entire studies have been undertaken to try to define planning! For now, we use the following definition that we think best captures what we do. It was included as a viable definition in a recent study by the Canadian Institute of Planners.
Planning is a future-oriented, systematic and creative profession that helps communities manage change in the built and natural environments in a manner that meets the social, economic, environmental and cultural needs of present and future generations. Planners facilitate processes that create better choices for where and how people live.
